One of the challenges of this story is finding the right balance of light cartoony moments, tender relationship moments, and moments like this that are true to the harsh reality of life. Poachers use guns, so we thought the story called for one to go off. My gut tells me that kids will go along with this, and indeed the ones we showed the story to seemed to take it in stride. Whether or not I can take it in stride is another story. Strangely, I find myself worrying about this little guy more than you’d expect from the person who drew these pages.
